Australian Abandoned Places, Urbex

When it comes to abandoned places in the world, Australia is not high up there on the list of places to travel but believe me we hold our own. There are still many untouched and decaying factories, crumbling asylums, rusty turbines of long disused power plants and houses being reclaimed by nature, around for us in the urban scene to explore and photograph before there gone.

Over the past few years I’ve been lucky enough to visit some amazing places before they were demolished or destroyed, meeting other like minded people that also have a passion for photographing abandoned buildings, along the way. Urbex has been a great way to make new friends as we get together on road trips to find new locations.

Finding new locations often leads to that excitement you haven’t felt since your childhood days. Once you find a location it opens a can of worms with you needing to know all you can on the place, why is it abandoned, the history behind it, what’s in its future, and so on.

So what do we do with years of photographs and the information we have spent endless hours researching? For some they’re locked away on hard drives never to be shared, others will post on YouTube handing the information to all the wrong people and wonder why something they enjoyed finding is now destroyed, others will post on social media with a little background and hope the location will stay protected.

For me, things started out with sharing images with small groups on forums, sharing information and learning the history. Then it went to social media and the scene became flooded with people but I did find inspiration in a few accounts. These accounts are what lead me to realising my first published book, Abandoned Brisbane: Our Lost Heritage.  There’s a few books about these days when it comes to Australian abandoned places but the following are hands down my favourite!
